Crucifying the Amish Mary

This painting is the 2^nd of six watercolors from the series: Scarecrows & Catholics. It is titled, “Crucifying the Amish Mary” (11 x15) and done on Arches 300 lb. cold press paper in the studio from sketches and references.  You could interpret this watercolor as a statement on the status and condition of women in society.  I painted the scarecrow as presented with little or no changes. It was done in partial sidelight.  I added the subtle, red badge in the hat for courage while the addition of the blindfold speaks to the injustices faced and more often suppressed rather than contested.  The pink ribbons were attached and hung limp but I swirled them, suggesting that hope and change are in the future.  Sometimes, I scare myself.
