This plein air sketch was done on Isla Mujeres, off the coast of Cancun. I was strolling the beach and came across a group of fishermen resting from their chores and did a quick, gesture and value study trying to catch the unguarded moment. Back in the studio, the sketch provides a full range of sensations that later adds artistic intangiables to the final painting
(shown below).
Over the years, I've visited Mexico and the cities of San Miguel de Allende, Puerto Vallarta, and Isla Mujeres gathering visual references about the people and their colorful way of life. Here's an example of a painting that speaks to "capturing the moment".
"Break Time"
6 x 10 Pencil and Charcoal Wash
                  "Isla Time"
           Watercolor 8.5 x 11
As the painting proceeded, I was intrigued with bringing out more of the contrast between the shadows and the warm light in the foreground and background.
