Backyards have changed. I was worried electric and gas dryers had made hanging clothes outside passé. Luckly, I found this wonderful line of clothes drying in the summer sun. This painting contrasts the tight use of marks against the energetic splashes of color and the direct brushstrokes in the laundry. Careful placement of positive and negative shapes helped to create a harmonious, balanced composition.
When I saw the inverted cans atop the picket fence in the morning light, it reminded me of helmets and soldiers at attention and General Pickett's famous charge at Gettysburg. I loved the interplay of cast light on the white fence slats and the colors of the haphazard cans. The composition suggests a “V” shape arrangement. Because I saw the scene as more whimsical in nature, the brushstrokes are simple and direct with a splash-like application of color.
